Staff Sergeant Carolyn M. Spence
Branch of Service: United States Marine Corps
Years of Military Service: 1943 – 1945, World War II
Specialties: Control Tower Operator
Foreign Countries Where Veteran Was Stationed: Cherry Point, NC
Highlights of Military Service: I learned to love airplanes and could identify them by the sound of their engines. The pilots would “wag” their airplane wings as they passed the tower to say hello. Out of 2,200 women on the base, only 15 were employed in the tower. I was able to hitch a plane ride with Admiral McFall home to Connecticut for the holidays. He made a special stop in New London, Conn. to get me closer to home. After more than 70 years, I am still good friends with my bunk mate.
