What to Expect at the Polling Place

With the Optical Scan Voting System, here's what to expect when you go to the polls - whether voting early or at your precinct on Election Day: 

  • Show your valid and current picture and signature ID
  • Sign the keypad of the electronic poll book
  • Receive a ballot ticket printed by the electronic poll book 


Receiving Ballot

  • Take your ballot ticket to the ballot distribution manager
  • Receive your paper ballot


Voting Booth

  • Proceed to voting booth

  • Use black pen provided to fill in the ovals next to your choices
  • Review your ballot
  • If you wish to make changes, ask a poll worker for help

  • Once you have completed voting, take your ballot to the ballot scanner near the exit

  • If your ballot is marked correctly, the scanner will accept your ballot, record your votes and deposit the ballot into a locked ballot box

  • The scanner will alert you if your ballot appears blank or contains one or more overvotes

IMPORTANT: If you have any questions, ask a poll worker for help. Once you have inserted your ballot into the scanner and your votes are recorded, the ballot CANNOT be returned

  • You will be given the option to either ACCEPT the ballot as is, or RETURN it to you for corrections


An ADA accessible voting machine,the AutoMark,will be available at each early voting location and Election Day polling place.

  • This ballot marking device uses an optical scan ballot
  • The AutoMarkallows voters with disabilities the option to use an audio function with headset and Braille keypad
